Spyware and Virus Protection
True Story ...My Sister bought her first PC
and signed up with an internet service provider (ISP). Thirty minutes later her PC crashed. She took it back to the store, where they checked it out and told her she had a virus or a Trojan horse. They cleaned the hard drive for her (Probably at some exorbitant charge.) She discontinued her ISP and has not connected to the internet since. She wants no part of it despite my contention that I can prevent it from happening again.Did you know that if you have cable or DSL as an internet connection,
as long as your PC is turned on and your connector cable is plugged into the modem, then you are on the internet. This is true whether you have Internet Explorer or Firefox launched or not. That means you are vulnerable to viruses and Trojan horses immediately upon powering up.
A firewall is vital in today's world.
Windows XP or Vista includes a firewall as part of its installation. Perhaps, a better idea would be to purchase a router or switch and place it between your connection to the internet and your PC. That way, your computer address would not be seen from the internet. Rather than the computer address, the router IP address would be what the net sees. I will go into all of this in some detail later.
Most households today have more than 1 PC. (We have 3.) If they are not all in the same room, you must come up with a way to connect them to the internet. Running coax or ethernet cable in an older or in a two story home can me difficult, not to mention expensive. It is a very simple matter to setup a wireless network within the home. The router I mentioned previously can serve this need well if you make it a wireless router.
There can be two problems here. One is range, especially in a two story home but that can be overcome with a piece of harware called a range extender. The other problem is that of security. If you have a wireless network, anyone within range can connect to your network. (That is the way hotspots such as in Starbucks work.) To avoid this, make youre you use the encryption feature to make yours a secure network. Unsecured is easier to setup but it carries a big risk.
