The first rechargeable batteries for laptops were nickel cadmium (NiCd) batteries. They didn't cost much, worked very well and could be used in many different devices. However, as more efficient and lighter batteries have come on the market, many laptop companies have discontinued using NiCd batteries.

Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) Batteries:

NiMH was a big improvement concerning power output, reliability, cost, safety and capacity. The "memory effect" was the only issue with NiMH batteries which require them to be fully discharged before recharging to gain maximum output. These batteries can still be found in older model laptops.

Lithium Ion (LiON):

This type of batteries has become the most popular for laptops since the "memory effect" has been eliminated, and much lighter than the other two in weight. However, the market price is also the highest.

Cell Phone Batteries

You can now buy cell phones for a fraction of what they used to cost, but they can still involve a sizeable investment. You might have to save up to buy the cell phone you want, and you will need to budget your monthly income to accommodate the user fees and call charges. Another expense that should be considered is the cost of better cell phone batteries.

You can stick with the basic cell phone battery that comes with your phone, or you can upgrade. You get what you pay for, and the cheapest cell phone battery is probably not very good. Beware of restored cell phone batteries being sold at low prices. They're made with used parts and, as a result, don't work nearly as well as new cell phone batteries. While it's possible to locate a high-capacity battery for a good price, make sure it's new and not a restored cell phone battery.

The Camera Battery

The camera battery is the most important component for your digital camera. Depending on the power of your camera, the battery may only last a few hours before going dead. Some people select cameras that have digital camera batteries that last a long time. Folks with these cameras can keep shooting for days and months with no downtime. Consider how you're going to use your camera and when before you make a digital camera battery purchase.

Two kinds of digital camera batteries are available today. The AA battery is very common, as is the rechargeable digital camera battery. Also known as proprietary batteries, these are usually made by the manufacturer.
